Have you ever thought about the reputation the public holds of salespeople? When you do, what comes to mind? Is it less than flattering? Unfortunately, many people see salespeople as something to be loathed and avoided.

Why is that?

It’s because most people do it wrong! Here are ten primary reasons we may view salespeople with disdain. Avoid these ten pitfalls, so your customers think of you as an enjoyable and helpful valued resource.

  1. Not being prepared.
  2. Being self-serving.
  3. Talking too much and not listening.
  4. Not selling what customers need or want.
  5. Pitching things. Caring only about the short term.
  6. Overpromising and underdelivering.
  7. Not following up.
  8. Not being genuinely curious about our customers and what they need.
  9. Being pushy or refusing to accept “No.”
  10. Trying to be too smart. No one knows everything.

So, yes! Selling can be dirty, but it is not when done correctly.
