Has Been versus Change
by Don Sharp

What used to be is not always better, but some people cling to the past.
Do you remember rabbit ears? I am not talking about the Easter Bunny or Bugs Bunny. I am talking about the funny looking wire contraptions that were on the top of televisions. At one time everyone had rabbit ears or antennas mounted to their houses. Are you old enough to remember the snow, interference from airplanes, horizontal and vertical knobs?

In olden days the picture would roll. One would turn the vertical knob to stop the roll or turn the horizontal knob to keep the picture full face. The old days were not so great after all. What used to be is not always better, but some people cling to the past.

Remember when laptops and notebooks were first introduced and sales people fought using them? Now everyone has a one. Some still feel the fifties were great. Some still feel service people should not sell. Some still feel sales is a man's world. Some still feel segregation is good.

If you are living in the past: 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, or 90's, if you are fighting change, wake up! The horizontal and vertical knobs are gone. It is the year 2001. A new century. A new millennium!

Get With the Times. Some Suggestions.

  1. Read at least one non-fiction book a month.
  2. Listen to audio tapes or CDs that pertain to your profession
  3. Find pros and cons on any topic
  4. Attend at least one trade show per year
  5. Take a training course
  6. Ask your customers for feedback about you
  7. Go back to school
  8. Join a professional group
