| Eight Tips For More Interesting Presentations |
![]() |
||
| 1. |
Be well groomed and dressed appropriately for the occasion. Do not wear a strong scent and make sure your clothes and shoes are comfortable. Style your hair neatly, clean your teeth, and smile. |
||
| 2. | Be who you are. Audiences can spot a fake a mile away. Develop your presentation style and voice. Use them. This sets you apart from everyone else. “Oh, she’s the lady with a smile in her voice,” or “He always seems so enthusiastic.” | ||
| 3. | Customize your title slide to include your client’s name or the name of the organization as appropriate. As much as possible, personalize your entire presentation…perhaps in editing your slides, or perhaps simply stating, “And, Dr. Smothers, I know you have a particular concern about airborne bacteria.” | ||
| 4. | Go through your presentation and polish it. Each slide must have both a point and purpose. Use a consistent format throughout the presentation. Do not crowd a slide with too much information. No more than seven lines of text or 36 words per slide is a good guideline. Run spell check! Have someone proofread all of your materials. | ||
| 5. | Use quality clip art, photos, pictures, animation, sound clips, bulleted and numbered lists, graphs, etc. as appropriate to liven your presentation. | ||
| 6. | Avoid reading directly from your slides. Practice your presentation in front of a mirror, and even better, video your presentation as well. Play back the video and be brutal. Polish and practice until you are happy. | ||
| 7. | Prepare handouts. This way, everyone in the audience has a place to jot down questions and important points of discussion. Remember to include your contact information on every handout. | ||
| 8. | Involve your audience by asking questions. Be sure they feel free to interrupt you with their questions. Maintain good eye contact with everyone in the room. When the audience actively participates in the presentation, they remember far more. | ||
